🎨 My Step-by-Step Process for Painting a Portrait
By Artist Chembaline C. Uche (Chembx)
Creating a high-quality portrait involves thoughtful preparation and skilled execution. Here’s a breakdown of my workflow from start to finish:
📸 1. Picture Subject Preparation
-
Selecting and Resizing the Photo
I begin by selecting the photograph I want to use as the reference. I import the image into CorelDRAW, and if the painting will be, for example, 24 x 36 inches, I set the page layout in CorelDRAW to match that size. I then scale the image proportionally to fit the canvas layout accurately. -
Preparing the Reference Image
I save the resized image as a PDF file and transfer it to my iPad. This allows me to view the image in full detail and reference it closely during the painting process.
🖼️ 2. Canvas Preparation
-
Building the Stretcher
I construct a custom stretcher and stretch high-quality canvas over it. -
Priming the Canvas
I prime the canvas using gesso to ensure the paint adheres properly and the colors appear vibrant. -
Studio Setup
I mount the canvas on my easel. I also prepare:-
Brushes
-
A clean rag (for cleaning brushes)
-
Palette and palette knife
-
The iPad or reference display
-
✏️ 3. Image Transfer
-
Tracing for Accuracy
I trace the reference image using tracing paper and my laptop screen to ensure accurate placement of the subject on the canvas. This helps maintain proportions and overall balance.
🎨 4. Painting Process
-
Color Mixing
I arrange the required colors on my palette and mix any specific tones needed to match the subject accurately. -
Painting the Portrait
I begin painting, working in layers — transferring tones and colors from my reference image to the canvas with care and precision.
✅ 5. Finishing & Delivery
-
Signing the Artwork
Once the portrait is complete, I sign my signature to authenticate the work. -
Framing the Painting
I select the appropriate frame color and size, cut the frame to fit, and mount the artwork professionally. -
Client Delivery
The final piece is securely packaged and delivered to the client, ready to be cherished or gifted.
